A few fashion and beauty myths that need to be erased…
No wearing white after Labor Day…This is an oldie but it still lives on. You can tell grandma that after many years, the rule no longer applies! We’re creatures of habit, so it’ll be hard to get out of the swing of not wearing white for nine months, but just think how exciting it’ll be to add another color to your winter wardrobe! Go for a soft shade of white, known as “winter white”, or an Eggshell or Ivory. You don’t want to blend in with the snowy outdoors.
Never wear denim with denim…This fashion myth has definitely been debunked! 2011 was a huge year for denim shirts, vests and jackets paired with denim bottoms and the trend is still going strong. Celebrities like Kanye West, Rihanna and Usher have been seen rocking this look. Not to mention it’s been all over the runways! Try mixing up the washes, the idea is not to match what’s on top exactly with what’s on the bottom. Another great variation is white or black jeans with a denim blouse. You know what they say, you can never have too much of a good thing!
Don’t wear light shoes with dark stockings…
Nonsense! At Jones we think this trend can be very sophisticated and ‘fashion-forward’ if done right. It adds fun and brightness to an otherwise dark look. Sarah Jessica Parker wore it well at a movie premiere with a black dress, black Opaque stockings and light pink shoes…so chic!
Don’t wear silver and gold at the same time…
Don’t be silly…designers nowadays are creating jewelry and clothing that incorporate both. It’s cute and gives you more options when choosing complimentary accessories. Michael Kors shows us this trend in his line of watches, he plays up the gold/silver combo very nicely.
The higher the SPF in your sunscreen the better…
Think again. The most important thing is that your sunscreen is broad-spectrum, meaning it protects against both the UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays of the sun. The bottle can say SPF 50 and still not protect you from both types of harmful rays which is defeating its purpose.
Less is More…
Is there a such thing as overdoing it? Yes. But does that mean always opting for minimal chic, and not occasionally piling on the fun funky jewelry isn't an option? Absolutely not. Between designers like Duro Oluwo mixing and matching prints (see above) and cool jewelry designers, like Alexis Bittar, becoming just as well known as mainstream clothing designers, who needs minimal? Playing it safe is a great way to blend in, so take a risk and be bold.
