• The Covers

September is a big month in the magazine industry and it is exciting to see that African American women are gracing the covers of ten national magazines. This is a beautiful synergy that is groundbreaking but should become the norm. It is beyond the time that we shouldn’t have to do a double take to see an African American actress, musician, politician, educator, writer, artist, activist, and woman on a cover of a national magazine.

Seeing all of the beautiful brown faces gracing covers with the strength, fierceness, and confidence that exude through the page, I can’t help but think of our young generation of girls growing up facing the reality of identity, purpose, sexuality, finding their voice, standards of beauty and more. It is great to see that they can pass a newsstand or look on the internet with influential eyes and see a familiarity or a piece of themselves and learn about women who have achieved greatness.

Let’s hope that there are many months to come that women of color can collectively grace covers because there are so many amazing women doing great work to change the world. Whether you have a digital platform for your magazines or you visit a newsstand, let’s celebrate collectively. Share this moment with a young person in your world and remember we’ve come a long way but we have a longer way to go to make this the norm. The national platform always helps, but we all have the gifts within to continue the work to create change and influence the people around us and the younger generation in a positive way.

Here is a quote for some reflection and motivation, “Be the change you want to see in the world,” Gandhi.
